Skates WP by mindflenzing Skates WP by mindflenzing
After many weeks of playing around with designs which I didn't at all like, I've come up with a design I like for Skates, my new Deva Artificer for LFR. I got the chance to play her for the first time last Wednesday when our healer could not show up for Encounters. We were at a table with characters who have about no healing surges and an extremely ugly fight. She had to pull off three Arcana checks well over DC 20 (as a first level character) fortunately with her +11 Arcana and Memory of a Thousand Lifetimes power she did not miss a single check. Without her powers, half the group would be going into their next fight bloodied with no healing surges.

Skates is a Deva and basically she served Oghma, the god of knowledge and pissed him off with a flippant comment about Mystra's (the goddess of magic) death and was condemned to field work in Toril for an indefinite period of time. She's great with Arcane and Divine knowledge as well as History and isn't half bad with Stealth and Thievery. She's basically a tinkerer and astral engineer with a big mouth and little regard for mortals though she needs the community service hours to get back to the Astral Sea. One of the most fun things about the character is the anime elements she has. She's sorta got the whole angel and devil on her shoulders. She has a book imp familiar which is a construct that looks like a chibi version of her with bat wings and a pitchfork and does her healing powers with another chibi construct that looks like her in a nurse's outfit with a huge syringe that she jabs into the hindquarters for healing infusions.

Pretty much. Those two would jam needles up the party's keysters till they didn't want any more healing. I just wish there were a halfway decent mini for either of them.

I love the goggles! And the fire...and the evil smile, and the cute hair. I'd love to see a pic of the book imp--she sounds hilariously cute and scary.

I never did come up with designs I liked for the "devil" on her shoulder or the one on the other side (with the gigantic needle for "healing infusions" sent right up the backside). I haven't gotten to play the character lately as we've had dry spell of face characters and meat walls, and alas, Skates is neither. I've had a few fun characters come through lately but I've been too busy to draw any of them.

Pretty slick design man. It's interesting how high up the boots go. Personally I have never experimented with boots going up so high, but I might have to give it a try eventually.

What species is she supposed to be?

Thanks. I synthesized a pic I got from the Pathfinder RPG with another oddball mini I found and ended up with a character that looks more like an Eberron (think Maltese Falcon meets Lord of the Rings) character than a Forgotten Realms one.

She's a Deva. They're basically angels that have become trapped in the mortal world being reborn time and again as new adults with vague memories of their past lives. They generally depict Devas with blue, white, or purple skin but I love to find little ways to buck the official description of many races because I can.

Oh? I thought it was completely original. You know I'm getting ready to create a comic series, or thinking about creating one, where this guy goes to a world populated by beings I have dreamed about. It would be pretty diverse and alien.

I think from a design perspective you did the right thing. Blue or purple wouldn't have the same effect.

A new one I take it.

Probably. With the brown jacket purple and blue are less fitting.

Yea a new one, where the main character would just be a regular guy not a superhero. The comic would basically be a long series of "what the crap?!" moments.

Well yes, with the costume brown and blue wouldn't go as good, but if you used the traditional colors you would also have to go with either brighter colors or black and I'm not sure how well that would fit your characters profile/personality.

There is a bright yellow and the green has bright highlights. Black is too somber for this character. She's kinda like a talkative "Masshole" (jerks from Massachusetts). With Charisma as a dump stat being outgoing and talkative is not a virtue.

The funny thing is that she got magic goggles just before I did the pic. Goggles of "just how d@mn many hit points does this stupid solo brute have anyways". The answer is "yes".

Hummmm... Her and your warforged 'maiden', graphically, they look like they'd fit Eberron and it's "dungeonpunk"ness more. Or so I feel.

Well both Artificiers and Warforged are creations of Eberron. Putting them into LFR does not change their feel of the race/class.

Was just talking of the way you made them look and dressed up; a french maid, helmet with googles... kinda eberonesque.

Well the Warforged is based on R. Dorothy Waynewright from The Big O and the Artificier's design was based on a mixture of a Reaper mini and a Pathfinder image that I used for her on the table. In Skates' case she's from the Astral Sea so being different is as natural as endlessly bitching about Toril (the world of Forgotten Realms).

Its a world map I did for my home game D&D setting of Anduris. It took me a lot of time to do so I throw it in as a background element in most of my fantasy wallpapers to save me doing any real work for BGs. Doing a Tolkien styled map is a real pain in the neck. If you were curious about the world itself I have more pages notes than you ever want to hear.

Yeah I can imagine it being hard work to make such a map.
You did it by hand I assume?

As for notes, well, I'm sure it'd be fun but I doubt I'd ever have time to read through them all if they're as copious as you warn me of.

:D

Yeah, I drew it by hand. I'm still debating if it was wise to letter by hand but it's too late to change that.

Not even the players in my campaign would want to read the notes. I could give you the basic rundown. It is probably the only fantasy setting more inspired by Dark City and the Warhammer 40K Imperium than Middle Earth and Medieval England.

There's no psionics but the world is a construct that requires external input of energy to support life. The land is made of one disc sitting upon another disc supported by six pillars some of which are visible from the "known" world. There is really no sun, sky, or stars and both the Maker's city and prison of the three (their version of hell) are below the surface of the world.

Sounds like it could make for some serious existentialism and paranoid RP!

Awesome stuff!

Especially when the encounter the servants of Del'Edias, the mistress of madness (one of the three) because she can twist the fabric of reality in very wrong ways.

Granted, he's glad he's alive again, and I'm sure the rest of the party is too since he dealt the finishing blow, but Kiyu still feels kind of violated by that syringe.

Healing description reminds me of a Yu-Gi-Oh card of similar subject matter. Got a good laugh out of it. How many of these characters do you have?

Skates would be my 12th active LFR character. The character is meant to be funny. Having a leader role character who is better at hiding than talking is pretty amusing.
